Federal law has required presidents of both parties to maintain warm unofficial relations with Taiwan.
China’s extreme military response to Nancy Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan sends an unequivocal message to the US that it can no longer sustain its policy of “strategic ambiguity.”
“China has no right to interfere” with Taiwan, Joseph Wu, Taiwan’s Foreign Minister told the Associaed Press. Taiwan is the last bastion of the Republic of China, the nationalist government that ruled the mainland under Chiang Kai-shek prior to its defeat in 1949 in the Chinese Civil War.
One hopes that Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s upcoming visit to Taiwan is also intended to reassure free Asia that America will militarily defend Pacific democracies, despite the failure of the US either to deter Russia from invading Ukraine or adequately to defend it after it was invaded.
An important lesson learned after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine is that the Free World should immediately establish normal diplomatic relations with Taiwan.
